Editor's Dispatch

Flying into Venice Municipal is a reminder of why we put up with Florida's congested airspace. Built right against the Gulf of Mexico, the airport features intersecting asphalt runways that often bring your approach directly over the water. It is a busy piece of pavement. Expect heavy flight training activity, parasailing operations just off the beach to the west, and a strict noise abatement policy that keeps the neighbors happy. Keep your head on a swivel for both wildlife and primary students in the pattern. If you are departing Runway 13, take note of the Engineered Material Arresting System at the end—a rare and expensive feature for a coastal GA field.

Once the engine stops at Skyport Aviation, the real appeal of this destination becomes obvious. Venice is known as the "Shark's Tooth Capital of the World," a relaxed coastal town that retains an unhurried, old-Florida rhythm. You do not need a crew car here, which is fortunate since the FBO does not offer one. Instead, you have the rare luxury of parking the airplane and walking straight to the water. A simple twelve-minute stroll from the ramp puts you directly on the sand at the base of the Venice Fishing Pier.

Your first dining decision happens before you even leave the FBO lobby. Suncoast Cafe is an on-field institution, trading the standard greasy-spoon burger for homestyle Caribbean dishes and an exceptional Cuban sandwich. Breakfast is served all day on Sundays, making it a reliable target for a morning run. If you want a view of the water instead of the ramp, walk the 0.7 miles down to Sharky's on the Pier. It delivers exactly what you want a beachfront tiki bar to be, serving thick grouper sandwiches and cold drinks right on the edge of the Gulf.

For those extending the day into an evening, the area easily justifies skipping the flight home. Directly above Sharky's is Fins, a polished dining room turning out premium steaks, sushi, and a front-row seat to the sunset. A short three-mile Uber ride inland brings you to the Italian-inspired architecture of the historic downtown district, or you can simply spend the afternoon combing the shoreline for the fossilized shark teeth that routinely wash up with the tide.

Venice is the gold standard for a coastal fly-in. The ability to shut down the engine, grab a Cuban sandwich in the terminal, and walk to the beach without once getting into a car is almost unheard of in Florida. Do not skip the Suncoast Cafe even if your ultimate destination is the pier. In winter, the Gulf breeze keeps the ramp exceptionally comfortable, though the snowbird flight training traffic is at its absolute peak. Fly a precise pattern, eat the grouper, and enjoy the rarest of aviation commodities: actual walkability.
