Editor's Dispatch
Flying into McNary Field means dropping into the heart of the Willamette Valley. It’s a proper Class D operation with long asphalt, an ILS, and a refreshing lack of user fees for light general aviation. Salem Air Center hands out courtesy car keys without demanding a punitive fuel purchase, though the twenty-four-hour self-serve pumps are priced competitively enough to justify topping off. The valley floor looks benign from altitude, but rising terrain to the west and south makes night operations legitimately hazardous. The tower will keep you separated from aluminum traffic, but you are entirely on your own when it comes to the waterfowl that treat the local airspace like their personal traffic pattern.
Salem is Oregon’s state capital, but it feels more like a working agricultural town that just happens to host the legislature. Surrounded by hazelnut orchards and prized Pinot Noir acreage, the city balances bureaucratic pragmatism with deep agrarian roots. The industrial zone bordering the airport hides a dense concentration of breweries and breakfast spots that make this one of the most reliable layovers in the Pacific Northwest.
The path of least resistance is the Flight Deck Restaurant & Lounge, located exactly a one-minute walk from transient parking. It delivers the classic fly-in experience with runway views and honest, heavy pub fare. If you secure the FBO’s courtesy car, the surrounding two miles offer a serious culinary upgrade. Black Sheep Cafe, operating in a nearby industrial park, turns out creative benedicts that easily beat standard diner plates. Later in the day, Santiam Brewing pours authentic cask-conditioned ales alongside proper fish and chips. Those willing to drive a bit further can attempt Word of Mouth Neighborhood Bistro for massive portions of crème brûlée French toast, provided you have the patience to outlast the weekend waitlist.
If the coastal overcast pushes inland and traps you for the night, Salem is an excellent place to be grounded. The downtown historic district offers enough walkable architecture to stretch your legs, but the real draw is the surrounding wine country. The Willamette Valley's tasting rooms are world-class, and securing a room in town gives you a basecamp to explore them without the premium price tag of staying directly in the vineyards.
Salem earns its keep by doing the basics flawlessly: reasonable fuel, free parking, and a courtesy car that actually works. The real catch is the geography. Ignore any temptation to shoot a night approach through the low winter mist, because the rising terrain to the south and west is unforgiving in the dark. Arrive mid-morning, keep your eyes outside for the wintering geese occupying the Class D, and take the FBO car straight to Word of Mouth. The French toast is worth the wait, proving that a capital city doesn't have to be hostile to general aviation to feed you perfectly.
