KSEE — San Diego/El Cajon, CA

Editor's Dispatch
Southern California airspace demands attention, but Gillespie Field acts as a reliable pressure valve. When the coastal marine layer shuts down the San Diego basin, KSEE often remains clear. The airfield itself is a capable three-runway layout cut into the East County hills. Circle Air Group frequently posts some of the lowest 100LL prices in the region at $6.69 a gallon. You earn the savings by managing the arrival—there is an 893-foot mountain sitting two miles east of the pattern, and noise abatement procedures are strictly enforced over the surrounding neighborhoods.
El Cajon trades the typical coastal aesthetic for hot asphalt and sheet-metal hangars. The airport boundary is surrounded by an industrial valley floor populated by homebuilt aircraft enthusiasts and heavy machinery. But that utilitarian exterior hides a distinct cultural ecosystem. This is "Little Baghdad," home to a massive Chaldean community that has quietly built one of the best Middle Eastern dining scenes in the United States.
Start on the tarmac. Gillespie Field Cafe sits right by the control tower, a three-minute walk from transient parking. It is a classic American diner executing the fundamentals: heavy burgers, hot coffee, and a patio that puts you close enough to hear the run-ups for Runway 09L departures. If you have the time to leave the fence, a fifteen-minute walk south leads to Buckboard's Barbecue & Brew. The draw there is the tri-tip sandwich, slow-smoked and served in portions that challenge the weight-and-balance envelope.
The real culinary payoff requires a seven-minute Uber ride. Ali Baba Family Restaurant is an El Cajon institution operating on an entirely different scale. The dining room is sprawling and ornate. The menu bypasses standard fly-in fare for massive, authentic Iraqi spreads. If you arrive with a hungry crew, order the "Feast for Three." It is an intimidating platter of grilled meats, rice, and fresh bread that makes the short drive mandatory.
Gillespie Field is a highly functional stop that rewards curiosity. Come for the discounted fuel and the easy access, but stay for the cultural subversion just outside the gates. Fly in before July, as by August the inland heat trapped in the valley makes the walk to the barbecue joint a miserable prospect. Watch your airspeed over the ridge, secure a cheap top-off, and eat something better than a stale crew lounge vending machine sandwich.
