Editor's Dispatch
Rochester International is built for serious iron, but it hasn't priced out the piston crowd. With 9,034 feet of concrete on the primary and a CAT II ILS, KRST is a heavy-duty Class D facility that handles everything from medical transport jets to winter cross-country flights. The single FBO on the field, Signature Aviation, operates around the clock. At an airport with this much infrastructure, you expect to be gouged on the ramp, but the 24-hour self-serve pump is dispensing 100LL for $5.81 a gallon—a genuine bargain for a facility of this caliber in the Upper Midwest.
The outsized capability of the airport is entirely due to the Mayo Clinic. Rochester isn't your typical Midwestern agricultural hub; it is a global medical destination. That constant influx of international patients, visiting specialists, and resident professionals gives the city an economic engine that punches far above its weight. It also creates an unusually sophisticated demand for hospitality. The result is a clean, highly organized city where the dining scene reflects a much larger metropolis.
If you just want to stretch your legs, Tailwind Concessions in the main terminal will sell you a passable burger, provided your arrival lines up with the commercial airline schedule. But the smart move is to borrow the Signature courtesy car and leave the perimeter fence. One mile away, Los Arcos Kitchen & Cantina serves excellent street tacos and a warm black bean dip. Head three miles south to the neighboring community of Stewartville, and you will find 2 Brothers Bar & Grill, a local fixture pulling serious brisket and serving a concoction called the Piggy Mac. If you have time for a twelve-minute Uber ride downtown, Chester's Kitchen & Bar anchors the city center with local walleye and rotisserie chicken that justify the detour.
KRST is the ultimate professional fuel stop with fringe benefits. Come for the cheap self-serve avgas and the reliable instrument approaches, but stay long enough to take the courtesy car into Stewartville for BBQ. The only real catch is navigating the fees at a major chain FBO, so call ahead if you plan to park on the main ramp rather than just hitting the pumps. And if you are flying through in winter, keep a close ear on the CTAF when the tower closes—snow removal equipment stays active through the night to keep all that concrete clear.
