Editor's Dispatch
Flying into Ocala means descending over rolling green pastures that look more like Kentucky than central Florida. The airspace is straightforward, anchored by the massive 7,468-foot strip of Runway 18/36, but the ground operations demand a bit of attention. Wildlife burrow mitigation has left the runway safety areas non-standard, and if you are departing Runway 18, you will need to hold runway heading until 800 feet AGL. Once on the ground, steer clear of Taxiway A1 if your wingspan exceeds 60 feet, and taxi over to Sheltair, where the self-serve 100LL at $5.13 a gallon makes the stop immediately worthwhile.
Ocala trademarked the phrase "Horse Capital of the World," and the local money reflects it. This is a town built on thoroughbreds and equestrian estates, blending high-end agricultural wealth with old Florida country charm. The airport itself caters heavily to this industry, complete with specialized equine handling services on the ramp, but you do not need to be hauling a million-dollar yearling to get premium treatment at the terminal.
The main event is Elevation 89, located directly inside the south wing of the modern terminal building. The walk from the chocks to the host stand takes five minutes. Forget the standard greasy-spoon airport cafe. This is an upscale-casual operation built to satisfy the local equestrian crowd. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer unobstructed views of the ramp and runway. The menu leans heavily into steaks, prime rib, and high-quality burgers, delivering a dining experience that matches the polished feel of the field.
If you have time to borrow a crew car from Sheltair, downtown Ocala justifies the twelve-minute drive. The historic district offers a sharp contrast to the modern airport infrastructure. Ivy On The Square serves excellent fried green tomatoes in a refined Southern setting, while The Braised Onion deals in creative comfort food anchored by its namesake soup. For a quick morning arrival, Crossroads Country Kitchen is barely a mile north of the field and plates up massive portions of traditional Southern breakfast.
Ocala International is the rare general aviation stop that gets everything right: competitive self-serve fuel, professional line service, and an on-field restaurant that actually justifies the flight time. The heavy, savory steaks at Elevation 89 land perfectly during these cooler winter months, long before the brutal Florida humidity returns in May. Skip the chain restaurants out by the interstate. Park the plane, walk into the terminal, and enjoy a meal that proves airport dining does not have to be an afterthought.
