Editor's Dispatch
Dropping into the Colorado River valley toward Laughlin/Bullhead International means navigating a ring of desert mountains to find a massive 8,501-foot runway waiting at the bottom. At 707 feet MSL, the field lulls you into a false sense of performance security. Winter arrivals treat you to dense air and smooth rides over the Mojave, but the math gets violent by late spring when temperatures reliably crack 110 degrees and the density altitude spikes. The approach itself is visually striking, tracking the blue ribbon of the river that sharply divides the stark terrain, leading straight to a towered field where the ramp is sprawling and the line service is fast.
This is a destination with a split personality, separated by a few hundred yards of flowing water. On the Arizona side, Bullhead City is a sun-baked river community of boaters and desert dwellers. Directly across the bridge in Nevada sits Laughlin, an unapologetic miniature Vegas of massive casino resorts, endless neon, and twenty-four-hour buffets. The FBO hands you the keys to a courtesy car, but you have to manage your own watch: Arizona ignores Daylight Saving Time while Nevada honors it, meaning a five-minute drive across the river can occasionally scramble your watch and your dinner reservations.
The terminal building houses the Bullhead-Laughlin Airport Cafe, serving exactly the kind of unpretentious breakfast burritos and burgers you want when you need to turn the plane around quickly. But the real culinary draw requires taking the car a mile and a half into Bullhead City to The French Connection. It is an unlikely find in the desert—a genuinely excellent Cajun and French outpost turning out savory crepes and rich pastas that easily justify the landing fee. If you prefer your calories delivered with casino volume, crossing the bridge to Bumbleberry Flats inside the Pioneer Hotel yields massive, syrup-drenched waffles and a sprawling weekend brunch spread.
With rental cars waiting on the ramp and rideshares readily available, tying down for the night is the obvious move. Laughlin delivers the complete resort experience without the Class B airspace complexities of Las Vegas. You can trade the cockpit for a blackjack table, catch a show, and wake up to a river view from a hotel tower. When hunger hits at two in the morning, The Riverview Restaurant at the Riverside Resort is still pouring coffee and slinging diner staples to the late-night crowd.
Laughlin/Bullhead is a rare mix of heavy-iron infrastructure and easy general aviation access. Fly in for the towering waffles at Bumbleberry Flats, but expect to pay the mandatory landing fee before you leave. Make the trip while the winter air is crisp and the aircraft climbs willingly, because by June, the sheer heat of the valley floor will force you to carefully recalculate your takeoff weight.
