KCWA — Mosinee, WI

Editor's Dispatch
Central Wisconsin Airport is an exercise in operational overkill for the average piston single, and that is exactly why you want it on your flight plan. With 7,700 feet of concrete, dual precision approaches, and a control tower operating around the clock, KCWA is the all-weather safety valve of the Northwoods. Add in full-service 100LL at an aggressive $4.99 a gallon from Ovation FBO, and this former regional airline hub becomes one of the highest-value technical stops in the upper Midwest.
The field lies just outside Mosinee, a hard-working mill town built along the edge of the Wisconsin River. This is not a polished tourist enclave. It is a place anchored by its paper mill and defined by a strict adherence to regional traditions. In Central Wisconsin, that means tavern culture, defensive driving on snow-packed roads, and a religious devotion to the Friday night fish fry.
The main terminal advertises the Blind Rooster Cafe, but do not be fooled. The restaurant operates entirely post-security, leaving general aviation pilots locked out unless they want to endure a TSA screening just to buy a burger. Fortunately, the real draw is a twelve-minute walk from the FBO ramp. Gorski's occupies a low-slung building just across the airport access road on Orbiting Drive, serving exactly the kind of heavy, unpretentious food a pilot needs after punching through a ragged overcast. They turn out massive breakfast skillets in the morning and a heavily battered Friday fish fry that commands fierce local loyalty.
If you have the time to grab an Uber, the culinary ceiling rises dramatically. Pinewood Supper Club overlooks the frozen shores of Half Moon Lake, a seven-minute drive away, delivering a masterclass in Wisconsin's most beloved dining institution. You come here for the thick-cut prime rib, the fresh lake fish, and a proper Brandy Old Fashioned. It is a loud, dimly lit, unapologetically midwestern dining room that justifies arriving late in the day.
KCWA earns its keep as a rock-solid destination with highly competitive fuel. Skip the terminal completely, park at Ovation, and make the short trek to Gorski's for a patty melt. If you are catching a ride to Pinewood, book a reservation well in advance. Winter in Marathon County is brutally cold and profoundly dark, making the glow of a crowded supper club the best possible reason to tie down for the night.
